Cómo responder “Tell me about a time you learned something new quickly”

Tell me about a time you had to learn something new quickly.

Cuenta el método, no el esfuerzo. Di qué tecnología era, qué plazo te diste («I gave myself a week to get up to speed»), cómo aprendiste — tests como documentación, pairing, construir algo pequeño — y qué entregaste al final.

Last year we inherited a service written in [Go] and nobody on the team knew it. I gave myself a week to get up to speed — I read the codebase using the tests as documentation, rebuilt a small piece of it myself, and paired with someone from the original team for an hour a day. By the end of the sprint I was shipping fixes on my own, and I wrote up what I'd learned so the next person didn't start from zero.

  • I gave myself a week to get up to speed
  • I used the tests as documentation
  • so the next person didn't start from zero

«I studied all weekend» no impresiona; «I used the tests as documentation» sí.
  • Decir «I have 3 years learning Go». Es «I've been learning Go for three years» o «I have three years of experience with Go».
  • Confundir «to learn» con «to teach». «Teach» es enseñar a otro; aquí tú «learned».
  • No decir cuánto tardaste. Sin plazo no hay «quickly»: «within a sprint», «in about a week».

En resumen: «Ponerse al día» es «to get up to speed», no «to put myself up to date».

  • Tell me about a time you had to learn something new quickly
  • How do you get up to speed with a new technology?
  • Describe a time you were out of your depth
  • How do you approach learning a new codebase?
